On March 27, 2024, members of VFW Post 845 celebrated the 100th Birthday of WWII veteran Chester "Chet” Whiting at the Briton Manor Assisted Living in Glen Mills, PA.
Chet discussed his service during the war where he was in the navy and assigned as an aircraft radioman and gunner. He also discussed his experiences with training and enduring 7 to 8 day-long train rides from the northeast to San Diego, and then from San Diego to Florida, and finally from Florida back to the northeast. One could still see the hurt in his eyes when he spoke of losing friends during the war. Chet was all smiles and mentally sharp throughout the celebration of his 100th birthday.
Tragically, Chet passed away four days later, on Easter Sunday. Post members are glad they had the chance to bring some happiness to Chet while he was still alive by sharing some old memories with fellow foreign war veterans.
